A new model Toyota Celica is all set to come to the market. Seth Godin for Real Now Godin has left the rumors and speculations behind and things seem very-well real indeed.
BestCar reported that during the fan event at Rally Japan, someone asked Akio Toyoda when the new Celica would arrive. “I can’t answer that,” was the reply Toyoda made. ‘But there is an executive here so I will just ask him’. At that time the mike was taken over to Toyota Executive Vice President of Product Yuki Nakajima who said, ‘The Celica is being made.’ From this response of the program, it seems to affirm the news.
What Engine Could Be Used?
Subaru, Mazda and Toyota issued a press release stating that the 3 are developing fresh 1.5 and 2.0-liter, four-cylinder motors. Such engines would probably be destined for electrified uses; however, a report also states that a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine was shown at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon—an excellent powerplant for something like a Celica.
In a different article published in Best Car the development of the turbocharged 2.0 liter engine was said to have started several years ago and is said to have been fully done already. According to the Best Car magazine, the power output of 400 horsepower is estimated.
Linking the new engine to the GR Corolla’s AWD system could be the foundation for a Toyota Celica All-Trac return. There was some expectation that a Celica would rival the GR86 or GR Corolla, but a GR86 with the powertrain of the new GR Corolla was unveiled at SEMA. Toyota could retire the GR86, incorporating new exterior design and part of the Celica or retain both cars with the company placing a non-All Wheel Drive Celica beneath the GR Corolla.
Past Collaborations as a Model
With BMW on the GR Supra and Subaru on the GR86, Toyota would likely work with such companies as Subaru and Mazda, with whom the company is already, for example, working on development of an engine. Sharing an engine, the Corolla chassis, and bolstering the GR Corolla/trims, Toyota could reintroduce the Celica to enthusiasts at the drop of a dime with a prelude-esque 2-door fastback.
