Volkswagen ID2: Some key developments pertaining to Volkswagen’s direction have been made public at the current show in LA Auto Show. But, focusing on strong upgrades on its ID series of EVs, the head of R&D, Kai Grunitz revealed that the actual production variant of the ID2all concept car will be unveiled at the next year’s Munich Motor Show. In addition, there will be a new car model from an all-electric hatchback to an SUV as well introduction by the unrelenting event.
In a recent interview with Autocar UK, Grunitz told that the following model to ride on Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform after the ID2 hatchback will be an SUV model. This SUV is expected to be launched in concept version at the Munich Motor Show in September next year 2025. Regarding design, the hatchback and definitely the SUV will feature a dramatic exterior design overhaul for Volkswagen in accordance with Schafer’s vision of revival of the once highly popular brand.
Updated Design of Volkswagen ID range
Grunitz has also stated that the actualization of the VW ID2all concept model of cars is expected to begin in the latter part of 2025 or early 2026 to mark this new phase at Volkswagen. He spurred that it left the customer expects to undergo major change surpassing their expectations. In addition, Grunitz mentioned that starting from 2026, there will be additional improvements to the existing ID range in terms of design innovations which will also reinstate the company’s values; improvements to battery costs; performance and new functions.
The upcoming ID cars and SUVs models, according to Volkswagen design chief Andreas Mindt, will follow the path outlined in the new ID 2all concept. This new design concept aims at being more welcoming and is inspired with traditional models like Golf. Grunitz stressed that such design language will be closer to defining what exactly ‘Volkswagen’ is, in the context of design appearance.
Volkswagen ID2 GTI Confirmed For 2026
There is presently planning to develop a sportier GTI derivative of the ID2. Grunitz recalled that, as for boosting performance in electric cars, which is easy, transferring GTI ‘genes, or characteristics of the previous Golf GTIs is harder. However, in this interview, he tease that the next generation of IDS GTI will feature what he terms as “shocking concepts.” Production of the first ever electric version of the GTI is expected in the next launching in 2026.
New EU7 With Reduced Combustion Engine Models
The upcoming EU7 emissions standards will reduce the portfolio of combustion engine models, Grunitz noted, while mild hybrids will grow. Though he did not state which models would be part of the planned model changes, he confirmed that VW Polo would not be affected. This class of car, which can still be found in India but is extremely unlikely to return to the country any time soon, will need a brand new version when the emissions standards are introduced.
Continuation of VW Platforms For EVs and ICE Models
Grunitz called attention to the challenges posed by the concurrent design templates like MQB for combustion engine vehicles and MEB for electric vehicles, the latter of which have had lacklustre demand. The author contributed and suggested that electric powertrains might be integrated into the MQB structure in the future. VW’s marketing chief, Martin Sander agrees with this opinion that dedicated architectures are of more benefit to customers, but noted that to the next generations, features and components have to be integrated smartly into platforms.
Upcoming Initiatives of Volkswagen India
While both the ID2 hatchback and ID2 SUV have not been officially announced for India yet, Volkswagen continues to ramp up local presence through joint ventures, including Mahindra which will supply battery packs for INGLO platform models like the BE 6e and XEV 9e. The company also has planned to work on new models of Taigun and Virtus along with Skoda Kylaq based compact SUV by 2026. Finally, Volkswagen has plan.
