Euro NCAP has published its latest round of crash test ratings, including the Volvo EX30, an upcoming compact electric SUV planned for India. The safety rating agency has given the EX30 5 stars and the SUV has got the overall figures in excess of 79% of all the test areas.
Protection of Adult Occupant
For adult occupant protection, the Volvo EX30 received a score of 88% and it got 35.3 points. In the side deformable barrier crash test the car offered marginal protection to the front occupant’s thighs with the rest of the body receiving good to acceptable protection. Full-width frontal rigid barrier test saw satisfactory levels of protection being offered to the passengers of the SUV that sits at the front seat. However, rear passengers accrued a marginal protection rating for the chest because the test dummy showed high compression readings.
Side Impact & Whiplash Protection
Volvo EX30 recorded good side protection in side mobile barrier tests though its strength was good in the protection offered in side impacts. Still, chest protection was considered to be low, particularly where the dummy hit the vehicle’s side pole. In far-side impact testing, the SUV demonstrated good management of excursion and received extra credit for its front center airbag, which prevented heads from contacting dummies.
Regarding whiplash protection, it was considered very good, while on the aspect concerning the possibility to open doors and windows in order to get out of the car – in case the car is engulfed in water – Volvo also scored high.
Child Occupant Protection
Additionally, the car received high results of 85% and 42 points for child occupant protection. This resulted in a full 24 points for impact protection and providing very good safety for 6-years and 10-year old children in both front and side impacts. However, the SUV has a weak point since it lacks a child presence detection systems installed in it.
Safeguarding At Risk Road Users
The new Volvo EX30 was tested in Vulnerable Road User protection and got its worst score of 79 percent. Some deductions were made as some automated safety features were not included by default. Euro NCAP further observed that head room for bolstering in the event of the impact with a pedestrian or cyclist was good to adequate in most cases, but less so near and on the A-pillar.
In the handling of various emergency cases, the autonomous emergency braking system came out well but it lost some points over the feature that does not enable pedestrian protection for the rear by default. More deductions were made for the ‘dooring’ system which aimed at preventing a door from being opens into the path of an incoming cyclist; this system had to be activated at the start of each journey in the vehicle.
Launch Plans of Volvo EX30
Volvo EX30 received 80% of the total marks in its onboard electronic safety systems with most of the functions articulated good results. The Swedish car manufacturer’s smallest next-generation electric vehicle will be the EX30, which will be launched in India in 2025. The firm provided assurance of its intention to launch the compact electric vehicle in July 2024 in India, with the EX90 to debut later.
